
Wet appliances use the most energy and account for 14% of a typical energy bill, that’s why washing at 30°C, running full loads and using them sparingly are all important to driving down bills.
Fridges and freezers aren’t far behind either, accounting for around 13% of a typical household energy bill. And cooking appliances make up around 4% of a typical bill – but it could be much higher if yours are old and inefficient.
Changing the temperature of your fridge Freezer can help save money, The colder your fridge and freezer, the more energy they use. In fact, the Energy Saving Trust has worked out that every degree colder uses 5% more energy. Just remember to have your fridge between 3°C and 5°C and your freezer between -15°C and -18°C to keep your food safe.
Cutting just a minute off your shower time could save £207 a year in energy bills, and a further £105 a year in water bills. Try buying a shower timer to keep your eye on the ball, or just set an alarm on your phone. You could also sing along to a shorter song while you’re in there – those within earshot may thank you.
The more water you boil in your kettle, the more energy you use. Be conscious about this when filling the kettle, so you don’t over fill your kettle
Switching off your devices at home or in the office is better than leaving them on standby, otherwise you’re using energy for something you’re not making use of.
Don’t heat the whole house when you’re spending all day in one room. Thermostatic radiator valves are an extra control which you can use to set the temperature of each individual room (other than where your main thermostat is). When the temperature in that room rises above what’s set on the radiator valve, it will stop water flowing through that particular radiator – the boiler will still be on to heat other rooms, but it will use less energy.
Many appliances have modes which make them operate at different speeds, temperatures and levels of power. Often, they have an ‘eco’ mode, which is marketed as being more environmentally friendly, by using this mode it will help save you money
