Boiler Service or Boiler Repair? Why a Faulty Boiler Needs Diagnosing First

18th June 2026 By GHS Leave a Comment

Common customer issue:
“My hot water works sometimes, but sometimes it doesn’t. Can I book a boiler service?”

This is a very common call-out we receive at GHS Group. Intermittent hot water is frustrating, especially when the boiler seems to work one minute and then fails the next. However, it is important to understand the difference between a boiler service and a boiler repair.

A boiler service is not the same as fault-finding. If your boiler already has a problem, the issue normally needs to be diagnosed and repaired before a full service can be properly completed.

What Is a Boiler Service?

A boiler service is a planned maintenance visit designed to check that your boiler is operating safely, efficiently and correctly.

During a proper boiler service, a heating engineer will usually carry out checks such as:

  • Visual inspection of the boiler and flue
  • Checking seals, components and general condition
  • Cleaning key serviceable parts where required
  • Checking the condensate trap
  • Gas rate checks were appropriate
  • Flue gas analyser readings
  • Safety device checks
  • Reviewing performance against the manufacturer’s instructions

A service is there to help prevent breakdowns, improve reliability and confirm the boiler is safe to continue using.

What a Boiler Service Does Not Do

A service is not designed to investigate an existing fault in detail.

For example, if your hot water only works sometimes, the engineer may need to test and diagnose parts such as:

  • Diverter valve
  • Flow sensor
  • Plate heat exchanger
  • Temperature sensors
  • Printed circuit board
  • Pump operation
  • Gas valve performance
  • System water quality
  • Blockages or circulation issues

These checks fall under fault-finding and repair, not a standard boiler service.

Why a Faulty Boiler Cannot Always Be Fully Serviced

If a boiler is not working properly, the engineer may be unable to complete all required service checks.

For example, if the boiler does not fire properly, cuts out, overheats, or operates intermittently, it may not be possible to check combustion readings, hot water performance, or heating operation accurately.

This means the service would be incomplete until the fault has been repaired.

In simple terms:

A service checks a working boiler.
A repair involves investigating and fixing a faulty boiler.

Once the boiler fault has been diagnosed and repaired, the engineer can fully test the appliance and complete the service.

Why You Should Tell Us About Any Boiler Problems Before Booking

It is always best to tell your heating engineer about any issues before booking your appointment.

Even small details can help, such as:

  • Hot water only works sometimes
  • Heating comes on, but hot water does not
  • The boiler keeps cutting out
  • Pressure keeps dropping
  • The boiler makes unusual noises
  • Radiators are not heating properly
  • Fault codes appear on the display
  • You have to reset the boiler regularly

This helps us book the correct type of visit and send the engineer prepared for the job.

Avoiding Unnecessary Call-Out Costs

Being clear about the fault can save you money.

If a customer books a boiler service but the boiler already has a fault, the engineer may have to stop the service and carry out fault-finding instead. This can lead to additional time, another visit, or further costs.

By telling us the symptoms upfront, we can advise whether you need a boiler repair, a boiler service, or both.

This helps avoid confusion and keeps the visit as cost-effective as possible.

A Realistic Example

A customer says:

“The hot water comes on sometimes, but sometimes it doesn’t.”

This would normally be treated as a boiler fault rather than a standard service.

The engineer would first need to diagnose why the hot water is intermittent. Once the issue is repaired, the boiler can be properly checked and serviced if required.

Book the Right Boiler Visit with GHS Group

At GHS Group, we believe in honest advice, clear communication and doing the job properly.

If your boiler is working normally and due for its annual check, book a boiler service.

If your boiler has a fault, poor hot water, pressure loss, noises, error codes or unreliable heating, let us know before booking. We can then arrange the correct visit and help you avoid unnecessary costs.

For boiler servicing, repairs, and heating fault-finding across Gosport, Fareham, Portsmouth, and Hampshire, contact GHS Group today.
