Why Does My Boiler Fire Up and Then Turn Off?

16th August 2024 By GHS Leave a Comment

If you’ve noticed your boiler firing up and quickly turning off, you might wonder if something is wrong. This behaviour is expected in some cases, particularly with combi boilers. These boilers often fire up briefly to preheat water, ensuring hot water is ready when you turn on the tap. However, if your boiler is frequently turning on and off quickly, it could indicate a problem known as “short cycling.” This issue can lead to higher energy bills and potentially cause long-term damage to your boiler.

What is Boiler Short Cycling?

Boiler short cycling happens when your boiler turns on and off repeatedly quickly without adequately heating your home. Typically, your home’s thermostat is set to maintain a specific temperature. Once that temperature is reached, the heating system shuts off, and the water in the heat exchanger cools down. The boiler’s internal thermostat monitors this temperature. If the water cools too much, the boiler fires to reheat it. Because only a small amount of water needs heating, the boiler quickly reaches the desired temperature and turns off again.

Now, imagine this cycle repeating every few minutes. Each time the boiler fires, it uses fuel without significantly heating your home. This wastes energy increases your heating bills and can damage the heat exchanger over time, potentially leading to expensive repairs. In some cases, replacing a damaged heat exchanger could cost between £200 and £400, not including labour.

Common Causes of Boiler Short Cycling

  1. An Oversized Boiler

One of the most common causes of short cycling is an oversized boiler. If your boiler is too powerful for your home’s heating needs, it will produce more heat than required, causing it to turn on and off frequently. Modern boilers are designed to be highly efficient, so selecting the right size for your home is crucial.

  1. Incorrect Boiler Pressure

Proper boiler pressure is essential for efficient heating. If the pressure is too low, the boiler may struggle to heat your home, while high pressure can cause various problems, including short cycling. Ideally, boiler pressure should be around 1.5 bar but always refer to your boiler’s manual for exact guidelines.

Low Pressure: Often caused by a leak in the system. Check your pipes, radiators, and boiler for signs of leaks. If you find one, turn off the water supply and contact a Gas Safe registered engineer.

High Pressure: This can lead to your radiators not heating correctly or developing cold spots due to trapped air. Bleeding your radiators can help release this air and improve water circulation.

  1. Faulty Thermostat

A malfunctioning thermostat can cause your boiler to short cycle. If the thermostat isn’t accurately reading the room temperature, it may unnecessarily signal the boiler to fire up. Additionally, the location of the thermostat can affect its accuracy. For example, if it’s near a drafty door, the boiler might turn on when the hallway is cold, even if the rest of your home is warm.

  1. Fuel Supply Issues

Boilers need a consistent fuel supply to function correctly. If the supply is interrupted, the boiler will shut off. To check for gas supply issues:

Ensure other gas appliances in your home are working.

If you use a prepayment meter, make sure it’s in credit.

Ask your neighbours if they’re experiencing similar problems.

Contact a Gas Safe registered engineer if these checks don’t resolve the issue.

  1. Poorly Functioning Water Pump

The water pump in your heating system is crucial for circulating hot water throughout your home. The boiler may overheat if the pump isn’t working correctly, leading to short cycling. A faulty pump may need to be replaced, which could cost around £300.

  1. Frozen Condensate Pipe

In winter, the condensate pipe in modern boilers can freeze, causing a blockage. This prevents wastewater from draining, leading to the boiler shutting down. Fortunately, a frozen condensate pipe is usually easy to fix. You can thaw it out using warm water—just be careful not to use boiling water, as this could crack the pipe.

Don’t Ignore a Short Cycling Boiler

Short cycling is not an issue to be ignored. If left unresolved, it can lead to:

Increased heating bills

More frequent boiler faults, resulting in costly repairs

The need to replace your boiler sooner than expected

If you suspect your boiler is short-cycling, call us today. We’ll help diagnose the problem and fix it before it causes more serious damage.
