The Hypocrisy of Review Platforms Manipulating Feedback

5th March 2025 By GHS Leave a Comment

In today’s digital age, trust is everything. Platforms like Checkatrade, Trusted Trader, and other review-based services market themselves as champions of transparency—helping consumers make informed decisions by offering honest, vetted business feedback. But what happens when these platforms manipulate their reputation by deleting and reposting social media content to erase criticism?

This practice, sometimes known as “comment resetting” or “strategic reposting,” is a sneaky way for companies to wipe negative comments from their social media pages while making it seem like engagement is fresh. If a company like Checkatrade or Trusted Trader engages in this, it’s not just misleading—it’s outright hypocritical.

Trust Is Their Business—So Why Hide Criticism?

Platforms like Checkatrade exist to help consumers find reliable businesses by providing honest, vetted reviews. They pride themselves on holding tradespeople and service providers to high professionalism, accountability, and customer satisfaction standards.

So, if they manipulate their feedback, it raises serious questions:

Can consumers trust that the reviews on their platform are authentic?

Are they protecting businesses with poor reviews like they erase their criticism?

If they’re curating their reputation, are they doing the same to the companies they list?

This is where the hypocrisy becomes undeniable. They expect businesses to accept and respond to criticism professionally, yet they refuse to do the same when they face scrutiny.

A Double Standard That Hurts Trust

When a small business receives a negative review on Checkatrade or Trusted Trader, it can’t just delete it and start fresh. It’s expected to respond, address the issue, and prove its credibility through action—not manipulation.

Yet, when these platforms receive negative feedback, they don’t follow the same rules. Instead, they erase, reset, and pretend the criticism never happened.

This double standard is damaging for several reasons:

It undermines their credibility. If they control their own narrative, consumers will question whether their business reviews are equally manipulated.

It sets a bad example – If they expect businesses to be accountable for their reviews, they should do the same with their criticism.

It raises ethical concerns—if they’re willing to erase feedback about themselves, are they also hiding negative reviews about certain businesses that pay for premium listings?

These questions create doubt, chipping away at the very foundation of trust these platforms are built on.

The Consequences of Reputation Manipulation

Deleting negative comments and resetting posts might seem easy to control public perception, but it often backfires. Today’s consumers are more aware than ever. If they notice repeated reposting or missing comments, they’ll call it out, take screenshots, and expose it.

When people see a platform engaging in stealth censorship, it invites a bigger conversation about its honesty. Instead of protecting its reputation, it risks losing credibility entirely.

What Should Review Platforms Do Instead?

If a company truly values trust and transparency, it should embrace feedback, not erase it. Instead of wiping negative comments, they should:

Acknowledge criticism professionally – Address concerns head-on rather than pretending they don’t exist.

Engage with dissatisfied users – Responding thoughtfully to criticism can improve reputation rather than harm it.

Hold themselves to the same standard as their listed businesses – If they expect companies to handle negative reviews with accountability, they should do the same.

Authenticity builds trust. If a review platform can’t handle public feedback honestly, why should consumers trust them to provide honest reviews of businesses?

If they demand transparency from others, they should be willing to live by the same principles.

Final Thought: If You Notice This Behavior, Speak Up

Don’t stay silent if you see a platform like Checkatrade, Trusted Trader, or any other review site deleting posts and resetting comments. Screenshots, reposts, and public discussions hold them accountable.

After all, a platform that sells trust should never have to hide from the truth.
