Step 1
Firstly, you will need to Isolate the water. This can be done with isolation valves (if they are fitted) and will be located on the pipework leading up to the tap, normally chrome in colour. Alternatively, turn off the main stop tap — this can be in a number of locations, sometimes under the kitchen sink, in a downstairs bathroom or in an airing cupboard.
Step 2
Remove the head of the tap — this is basically the handle or lever.
Step 3
Using a spanner or grips, turn the insert anti-clockwise and remove the whole working mechanism of the tap. Hold onto the tap to stop it turning or it may loosen the tap connector, creating a leak.
Step 4
Remove the old washer and replace it with a new washer. The washer is black and round and located at the bottom of the tap insert. It should just pull off or sometimes there might be a little screw.
Step 5
Use the tap reseater to clean the seat of the tap (where the washer sits to create a seal). The reseater basically shaves away the metal and cleans off the limescale at the same time. If there is damage to the seat, such as a crack or something that is preventing it from being completely smooth, a new tap will be required.
Step 6
Replace the insert turning it clockwise, back in the way it came off.
Step 7
Replace the tap head.
Step 8
Turn the water back on. No more dripping!
